Work Updates

...Yes I do work here (sometimes)

I have to write weekly internship reports so I thought I'd upload those here along with some samples of the designing I'm doing, so you can see what I'm actually working on while I'm here

Week One

Before I even set foot in the ICW Global office, I spent a few days going over the information on their web sites, several brochures and publications, and even a CD to get a feel for the history of the company and what they do. My first day at ICW Global, I met my boss Daniel Barberis. I introduced myself and we spoke generally about the purpose of journalism and how it has changed today with the existence of Twitter, Facebook, and Google. He told me what my responsiblities would be for the next few months: helping to improve and update three of their web sites (www.icwglobal.org,www.maspazmenossidaya.org, andwww.morepeacelessaidsnow.org). He began to show how the company used social media as well to create a sense of community for its members.

My second day, I met with Angie Alemandi, who I will be working closely with on the web design project. We spent time going over the web sites' faults and how they could be improved. From a designer's perspective, the site can use a lot of help to make it more aesthetically pleasing and interactive. It is very text heavy, with too much white space, and little color. We are going to start by mapping out the most important changes that could be made and attainable objectives to make the web site better.

With Artemisa Noticias, I did lots of preparation reading about their new project "Mujer y Naturaleza" a blog about eco-feminism. My first day in office, I spent my time looking online for relevant photos and artwork to make the powerpoint more aesthetically pleasing. I also continued reading articles and started separating them into two categories: Institution, and information about Eco-Feminism.

Today I designed the background for the powerpoint slides. by using some of the design standards from Artemisa Noticias' web site (color and typography) and the color schemes and tones Anna and Carolina had chosen for Artemisa Naturaleza. It is interesting how much design can actually speak ideas, even minute details like the separation of colors between words. Also today, I hope to finish a title page slide for the powerpoint.

Week 2

This will be changed. I'm not in love with the logo yet.
On Tuesday, at ICW, my boss showed us some videos so that we could learn a little more about the company. We asked if they had posted the videos to a youtube channel and he said that they had. He showed us the channel, but it looked like it had not been touched since its creation, so I offered to redesign the youtube channel. I added some information about the organization to the profile and created a new background image for the channel. I also designed the typography and colors to match the organization's existing brand identity. On Thursday, my boss asked me to design an image for a sticker to be placed in public transit that raises awareness about the treatment for pregnant women with HIV. I designed an image, then edited it based on my boss's and co-workers instruction. Then created a rough draft of the sticker, that I will probably redesign next week.

With Artemisa, working from home on Tuesday, I redesigned the first Powerpoint template I made. On Wednesday, I finished this template (for the Powerpoint with institutional information) and also created two new ones based on images that Carolina had sent me. The first is based on a second logo Anna designed for Artemisa Naturaleza for a Powerpoint with information about eco-feminism. The second is for a presentation titled "Libertad de Expresión". On Friday, I finished the Libertad de Expresión template and then designed a fourth template for a Powerpoint presentation titled "Medios y Sexismo". I then began adding institutional information for the first Powerpoint. I had to create some graphs in Excel based on new information about Artemisa's web site traffic.

Week 3
Redesign of the ad from last week. New logo. Better?
This week, ICW was drafting a press release to announce president Patricia Perez's visit to South Africa as a part of their "More Peace, Less AIDS" campaign. I was given a long list of South African newspapers and magazines and had to look up contact information for editors and publishers to send the press release to. I drafted a new version of the awareness advertisement for pregnant women with HIV. They wanted an image that was more similar to the pregnant woman icon in the buses and transit here. I then had to translate and recreate the entire ad in English, French, and Portuguese.

I went to two meetings with Daniel, Angie and Amy. In the first meeting we talked about social media and how we can change their Facebook page to get more viewers. We also talked about some design changes that I need to make for the YouTube channel and Twitter page next week. In the second meeting, we went over the "pregnancy" ad and discussed wording. We were trying to figure out whether the most important message of the ad is for women with HIV who are pregnant to see their doctor, or that if they do see their doctor, there is a good chance their baby will not contract HIV. The ad will be updated again next week.

I worked from home for Artemisa this week. I finished designing the institutional information powerpoint. I began researching subjects for the section of the web site "Mi momento ecologico". I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to use Wordpress this week. I am pretty unfamiliar with the web site, since Blogger is what I am used to and Wordpress seems more advanced, but I am finding my way around. I added "butónes" for all the pages Carolina wants on the blog, and began to try to customize the web site. I also uploaded Bianca's photos of "Basura en la ciudad" and "La Reserva Ecológica" but this posed a problem because I can't upload them as two separate photo galleries. Today I will work on a way to separate them from a separate web site and help Anna research for documents, case studies, and interviews on eco-feminism.
Week 4
This week at ICW, I redesigned their Youtube channel and began to design the twitter page. I also looked into creating a Blaving account for the organization, which is basically the same as Twitter but with a series of short voice recordings instead of text. Also I translated a press release from English to Spanish, and made Spanish, French, and Portuguese versions of the "More peace less aids" logo.

For Artemisa, due to travel issues, I had to work from home again. I redesigned the blog, to fit a more natural scheme. I also created four new Powerpoint templates, each based off of different images and all including a title page and a sub page design. Together Anna and I work on Mi Momento Ecologico and drafted a letter to send to potential people to feature on the page. I then translated the letter into Spanish.

Okay so I did four of these this week and they take a while to upload. So, Mom, let me know if you really want me to take the time to do it or if they are too boring ;)

ICW Global YouTube Channel

Week 5

I was unable to meet with my bosses this week at ICW, but I still got a lot of work completed. I finally finalized the design of the YouTube page, after having translated and recreated the "more peace less aids" logo into four different languages and colors. I was able to complete my design how I wanted it. It hasn't been approved by Daniel or Angie yet, so there may still be changes to make. Amy and I also started writing English subtitles for a video that is currently only in Spanish. This project will probably take a long time, as translating audio is a very slow process. We finished a translation from Spanish to English on a short biography of ICW president, Patricia Pérez.

With Artemisa, I continued work on the list of contacts for "Mi Momento Ecologico" and did research on who would be the best famous candidates for this critical section of the blog. I had a misunderstanding last week, and changed the design of the blog to focus around the wrong logo, so I had to resdesign the blog to its original state. I read and summarized on article about the trash collection in Ceamse (outside of Buenos Aires) and then chose quotes to incorporate into the "Basura en la Ciudad" photo gallery. I created a gmail account for the Artemisa Naturaleza and also a flickr account (which probably won't be used since flickr slideshows aren't permitted on WordPress blogs).  I spent a LOT of time figuring out photo slideshows and photo galleries on Wordpress. I ended up having to create PowerPoints of the photos I want in each gallery, uploading the PowerPoints to a web site called SlideShare and then embedding the PowerPoints on the Blog.

Today, I only worked two hours. I created and uploaded "El mercado orgánico" photo gallery. I fixed the banner (again). Created a link to the homepage and a direct link to Artemisa Noticias. I also figured out a way to make "mi momento ecologico" more prominent on the blog.

Artemisa Naturaleza (Note to my blog readers: this web site was SO much harder to design that it looks! be proud of Anna and I) Still unfinished so keep checking

Week 6
Because my boss Daniel was in South Africa this week. I worked from home for ICW. Amy and I continued on writing English subtitles for a video covering a conference for ICW. The process is tedious. We have to watch (several times) what the person is saying, write it in Spanish and then translate to English. We end up having to watch the same clip over and over, so the project will probably take a long time.

For Artemisa, I made several corrections to the blog page. I fixed the background so it is large enough to cover the width and length of the screen. I added a "Links Recomendados" page and linked all of the organizations that Anna researched to the web site. I wrote a short description of ecofeminism for its respective page, and added new photos to the photo galleries. I began working on a logo for the special report about the nuclear crisis in Japan, based off an image that Carolina had sent me. The logo is not finished and will probably go through many changes before it is finalized.

She wanted something with japan in the middle and hands, but still a feminine logo

She didn't like the first one, so she explicitly described this one. Not sure what i think about it but she liked it.
Week 7
Unfinished banner
For this short week, at Artemisa, I actually finished quite a bit of work. I created and finished a new logo for the special Japan crisis report. I made several changes in wording and in format to the blog. I translated an interview from English to Spanish. I designed and executed a special header for the "mi momento ecologico" page, which is not quite finished. I uploaded three videos and a new link to the blog. I added to the list of contacts for "mi momento ecologico" and began contacting some via email. Hopefully we start to get responses soon.

Since we hadn't met for a while at ICW, we had a long meeting with Angie, Daniel, and Mariano about our projects and priorities for the coming weeks. I translated a little more for the video, and fixed with Angie some of the errors we made. It's definitely easier with her to help actually catch what the speaker is saying. I added some videos to the youtube channel I created and am going to continue to search for more relevant videos to add to the page.

New Japan Crisis logo
Week 8

This week, I finished the Mi Momento Ecologico banner. It took a lot of effort creating all the small details by myself, but I'm really happy with the final product. I uploaded several new links to the recommended links page, and I subscribed to different blogs and news sources with the Artemisa Naturaleza gmail. I also added some new events to the "actividades" section. I emailed 45 different people and organizations individually asking for ecological moments. We received 2 responses, which I uploaded to the mi momento ecologico page and to the sidebar of the website. On the sidebar, I added a small "about us" section that can be seen anywhere on the web site. I posted a preview of the Courtney Carver interview on the homepage and uploaded it, as well as fixed translation mistakes onto the blog.

At ICW, I've been continuing work on the pregnancy awareness ads. They will be published soon so I had to basically rework them. I had to do both versions of the ad in horizontal and vertical, as well as change the wording, add new logos, and make them the proper dimensions. I didn't realize how much work could be done on a "completed" ad before it goes to publish, but its very exciting!

Actually pretty proud of this- don't know why
Week 9

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we were in Bariloche instead of working at internships, but I still learned a lot. We followed a reporter for Canal Seis to many different interviews. I'm not a broadcast major, so it was interesting to see TV news put into action, and seeing all of the different pieces that make up local news. It was especially cool to see the report live as it was being taped. I impressed myself with how far my Spanish has come since the beginning, it is so much easier for me to understand people, even when they are speaking about topics in which I don't necessarily understand all the vocabulary. My favorite "professional" part of the day was speaking to other journalism students. I really enjoyed sharing our experiences both in journalism school at home and also about learning journalism in Argentina, and comparing and contrasting the two different journalism education styles.

Thursday and Friday I was back in Buenos Aires, on my regular schedule. Things at Artemisa are exciting because they are ready to officially launch the web site. I worked on a smaller logo link to the site from the Artemisa Noticias web page and added another entry to Mi Momento Ecológico, as well as made other changes to the web site. I contacted two people for interviews, and only heard back from one, who I will be sending questions over email to add to the site.

At ICW, I finally had the correct dimension information and sponsor logo images. So I finally (for maybe the last time?) finalized the designs. I had to rework a logo from English to Spanish and change the layout of the two ads because my original dimensions were wrong, but I think the ad may be finally finished!

Week 10
For Artemisa, I finished the small logo link for the blog. I created and uploaded two new photogalleries of Biancas pictures: one for Dia de la Mujer, and the other of pictures from the Women's museum. I contacted, and contacted again, several people for interviews and unfortunately didn't hear back from any of them. I did receive a response from Julieta Gayoso, which I will probably translate and incorporate into the blog next week. I also tried to figure out how to change the domain from wordpress.com to artemisanoticias.com to no avail. I'm working on transcribing two interviews: a fifteen minute interview with Micaela, from Recibe tu Luna, and the other of a famous psychologist Dr. Carlos Warter. Transcribing in a different language is difficult and time consuming but I think it is helping me practice my spanish and the interviews themselves are also interesting. I tried to upload the blog as an mp3, but the quality isn't great, so it will probably work better transcribed anyway.

For ICW, I finally (actually this time) finalized the two flyers (in the correct dimensions and file formats) and burned them to a disc to hand in to Atacama, the company that will be displaying the ad. I also reworked both ads in horizontal and vertical in English (my own translations). I will be given the French and Portuguese translations to complete next week.
